AWE at the Great Wall

This is Katie Ort posting from Kristi's Computer

Today we finished our cultural exploration of Beijing by visiting the Great Wall of China! While it was still cold today (somewhere between 28 and 40 degrees) it was significantly warmer than our trip to the Forbidden City, and we were also well prepared so the trip was much more enjoyable!

When we arrived at the Great Wall, it was already a pretty incredible sight from a afar. Then we took a ski lift to the top and in a couple of minutes we were atop one of the great wonders of the world! It’s amazing to see it and think about how much work went into constructing the wall and maintaining it over time. It’s also amazing to think about how it was originally meant to keep people out but now it attracts people from all over the world.

At the end of our tour we chose to take the toboggan slide back to the bottom, which was truly a once in a lifetime experience! I had no idea this even existed until today, but if you have a bucket list this is something you should consider putting on there. The Great Wall is truly an amazing experience. I think people come from all over the world to see this, and other wonders of the world like it because it shows us what humans are capable of accomplishing. I for one am in awe of the ingenuity of these people, and it gives me hope that humanity is capable of coming together to tackle its biggest challenges.
